Western Region CSR Award Overview

Sekondi Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry is one of the most effective and efficient branches of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry providing business support and networking for its members. The Sekondi Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STRCCI) is charged with the following functions:

  • Promoting and protecting trade, commerce, industry and manufacturers in Ghana.
  • Collecting and circulating statistics relating to trade, commerce, industry and manufacturers.
  • Providing facilities for the communication and interchange of views between members of the Chamber on one hand and departments of Government, public institutions and other Associations on the other hand, on matters directly or indirectly affecting the interests.

CSR (Corporate Social Responsibilities) on the other hand, is about understanding our business impact on the wider world and considering how we can use this to  impact positively. It is a form of corporate self – regulation integrated into a business model. The CSR aims at embracing social responsibilities of an organization and encouraging a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere. Furthermore, CSR – focused businesses would proactively promote the public interest by encouraging community growth and development and voluntarily eliminate practices that harm the public sphere regardless of legality. CSR is also the deliberate inclusion of the Public Interest into corporate decision – making that is the core business of the company or firm and the honouring of a triple bottom line; people, planet, profit.

It is part of our business ethics. Our engagement in social responsibility is the business and managerial obligation to take action that protects and improves the welfare of society as a whole and promotes the interest of the companies operating in the Western Region of Ghana

A generally accepted model of social responsibility was developed by Keith Davies. He argues that social responsibility arises from social power because businesses have significant influence over issues like providing employment opportunities, contributing towards overall state incomes via prompt payment of taxes, and preventing pollution of the environment. CSR represents economic sustainability, income sustainability and environmental sustainability.

In sum the joint actions of all businesses to fulfill these roles determines the overall living conditions of the society. In that respect, society can and must hold business responsible for social conditions that result from exercising this huge influence. From the above, it therefore the responsibility of Sekondi Takoradi Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry to positively build relationships with companies operating in Western Region and operate open systems to receive inputs of their CSR operations from them and disclose the operations to the public in a transparent manner. This means both parties must listen to each other and  give and take to ensure a collective win-win situation for the common good of both parties and Western Region of Ghana.
